Chronic sleep deprivation, even as little as one hour less sleep per night than is needed, has been associated with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, risk-taking, aggression, bullying, sports injuries, diabetes, and more. Given that the most common sleep disorder is a lack of awareness, there is much that mental health and other professionals can do to intervene in this vital determinant of health. This workshop is designed to educate professionals on sleep needs through the lifespan; the most common barriers to sleep, including environmental barriers and DSM 5 sleep disorders; the effects of chronic sleep deprivation, including their influence on other DSM 5 disorders; and how to better support healthy sleep.

Stacy Simera, MSSA, LISW-S, SAP is chair of the sleep committee for the Ohio Adolescent Health Partnership and has presented on the topic of sleep at various professional conferences including 2013 Ohio NASW Conference, 2013 Ohio Public Health Combined Conference, 2013 All-Ohio Institute on Community Psychiatry Conference, and the 2012 NASW National Convention in DC and was cited in an editorial: “Sleepless in America: School Start Times” in the British journal Education and Health. Stacy serves as Health Policy Director for the Ohio chapter of the national non-profit Start School Later, serves on the leadership committee of the Ohio NASW Social Work Advocacy Group, provides psychotherapy at Gary Robinson and Associates in Kent, is an adjunct instructor at Stark State College, conducts workshops for the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program, and facilitates a psycho-educational group on managing depression at the Oak Clinic for Multiple Sclerosis. She was named 2014 region 2 Social Worker of the Year by Ohio NASW and was recognized by the Ohio Senate for this achievement.
