8:30 – 9:45 a.m. Transgender Competency, Terminology, Medical Support and Intervention ‐ Lee Ann E. Conard, RPh, DO, MPH
- The participant will be able to apply information from this session to create a safe
environment for transgender and gender non‐conforming youth and their families.
- The participant will be able to explain common medical treatment pathways to transgender and
gender non‐conforming youth and their families.
10 – 11:15 a.m. Therapeutic Interventions and the Creation of a Transgender Service Provider
Collaborative ‐ Evelyn Heflin, MSW, LSW
- Attendees will be able to apply best‐practices for providing culturally informed individual
and group therapy to transgender and gender non‐conforming clients.
- Attendees will be able to effectively assist clients access gender affirming medical procedures, legal
name changes, and gender marker changes on state issued identification documents.
11:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Systems Issues – Paula Ison, MSW
- Participants will understand why systems often view transgenderism as a threat in order
to more effectively assist transgender people navigate these systems.
- Participants will demonstrate a clearer understanding of the importance and impact of the
employment system on transgender individuals.

12:45 – 1:45 p.m. – Grief and Loss Experienced within the Family System in Response to Gender Identity Transition – Sarah Painer World, MS, MSW, LISW‐S
- Participants will demonstrate knowledge of the risks to transgender youth related to family acceptance.
- Participants will be able to accurately describe the emotional process families undergo when youth come out/transition.
- Participants will effectively utilize therapeutic techniques and referrals specific to working with family systems of gender nonconforming youth.
1:45 – 2:30 p.m. – Spiritual Struggles Experienced Within Family Systems – Susan Jelinek, M.Div., BCC
- Participants will demonstrate understanding of the impact of spiritual distress associated with gender non‐conforming youth and/or their parents/family.
- Participants will effectively articulate 1‐2 spiritual/religious interventions specific to working with gender nonconforming youth and/or their parents/family.
2:45 – 3:45 p.m. – Transgender Issues in Legal Policy and the Law – Paula Ison, MSW
- Participants will accurately identify the large body of case law, statutes, regulations and policy favoring the rights of the transgender population.
- Participants will accurately identify the current gaps in the law regarding important transgender issues.

Professional Biographies of Speakers
Lee Ann Conard, R.Ph., D.O., MPH - Dr. Conard is from Troy, Ohio. She graduated from Ohio Northern University with a degree in pharmacy. She completed her medical training at the Kansas City University of Biomedical Sciences. Her pediatric residency was at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and her adolescent medicine fellowship was at Indiana University/Riley Hospital for Children. Additionally, she completed a Master’s degree in Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Conard started working with transgender youth while she was at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and has continued working in this area for the past 11 years.
Paula Ison, MSW, has studied, lectured and consulted extensively on the topics of gender variance, gender identity expression and gender identity dysphoria to include potential etiology and evidence based treatment. Paula is a successful social policy advocate, working with the City of Cincinnati in 2015 to become the first city to ban conversion therapy. Earlier, Paula worked with the City of Cincinnati to add transgender health benefits to its group health plan. Paula also worked with Macy’s and Kroger to do the same for their group health policies. Paula is an adjunct professor for the University of Cincinnati School of Social Work and is a member of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission.
Evelyn Heflin, MSW, LSW - Evelyn currently practices as a licensed independent social worker. She received her Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Cincinnati in 2014. Evelyn developed and launched the Transgender Wellness Program at Central Clinic in the winter of 2015. She has received awards for both her work in program development and direct practice. Prior to her time in graduate school, she spent over a decade involved in advocacy and outreach work in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, DC. Since 2007, she has given presentations at numerous colleges, universities, and professional conferences on the needs of LGBT+ communities.
Sarah Painer World, MS, MSW, LISW‐S - Sarah Painer World has been a full‐time social worker with the Division of Social Services at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical since 2008. She has a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky (2006) and second Master’s Degree in Community Health Education from the University of Cincinnati (2014). Since inception (2013), Sarah has been the clinical social worker for the Transgender Health Program at Cincinnati Children’s and was instrumental in helping develop the program. Sarah has published articles in Cincinnati Parent Magazine, blogs with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on gender variance and develops/facilitates trainings of transgender health locally and nationally.
Susan Jelinek, M.Div., BCC - Sue Jelinek is a Senior Staff Chaplain at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where she has been on staff for 17 years. She is Board Certified through the Association of Professional Chaplains and is ordained by the United Church of Christ. Sue has been a chaplain for 27 years. As part of her unit responsibilities, Sue works with Sarah Painer World and Lee Ann Conard in the Transgender Health Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. It is within this Clinic that Sue, in coordination with Dr. Conard and research faculty Chaplain, Dr. Daniel Grossoehme, developed and conducted a study investigating levels of spiritual distress in patients and their caregivers.

OPA guidelines state that a participant may arrive no more than 10 minutes late or leave more than 10 minutes early to receive credit for a program. No partial credit will be given. The workshop planners will make every effort to ensure that each workshop begins and ends promptly at its designated time.
Continuing Education Credits for Social Workers and Counselors: The Ohio Psychological Association is approved by the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage & Family Therapist Board to offer continuing education to counselors and social workers. The approval number is RCS070608.
