Event Description
When working with couples in marital therapy, clinicians need to be vigilant about a number of ethical concerns. These range from the need for clear informed consent, to being prepared to respond to requests from the legal system. This seminar will address these issues, and will also prepare counselors to handle the frequent ethical dilemmas involved in the intense work of addressing both partners' needs as well as strengthening their marriage. Objectives: -Participants will learn about the specific informed consent, confidentiality, and risk management issues involved in marital therapy. -Gain understanding and skill in: 1. Addressing the best interests of both members of the couple in psychotherapy 2. The ethical obligation to balance safety concerns with those of sustaining and improving the marriage. 3. Responding to challenging and difficult issues in the couple relationship. -Ethical dilemmas in marital separation, divorce, child custody, and shared parenting will be discussed. Participants will develop knowledge of best practices in confronting these problems in clinical work.
