Event Description
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) continues to be a significant clinical concern for those working with children, adolescent, and transitionally aged youth. NSSI is behavioral coping mechanism typically tied to trauma experience and emotional dysregulation and is tied to social contagion for children and adolescents in particular. Due to intersecting issues related to NSSI and its link to suicide, assessment of risk and clinical decision making regarding effective treatment strategies can be particularly complex. This workshop will provide information that will assist clinicians as they work to differentiate between suicidal intentionality and NSSI, provide a framework for risk assessment, discuss educational resources for parents, teachers, and other providers, and review brief intervention strategies designed to motivate and encourage change/healthy coping. Learning Objectives: (also the order of topics for the agenda) (1) Participants will learn the difference between suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury. (2) Participants will understand how to conduct risk assessment when clients present with non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors and will learn to develop safety plans specific to this issue. (3) Participants will learn effective treatment strategies design to address emotional dysregulation associated with self-injurious coping.
