Description:
Older adults and their families are often confronted with a cascading sequence of critical life events that require decisions about medical care, driving, financial management, residential status and supportive services. It is hard for everyone to be on the same page, especially when the older adult's independence is at stake and family concerns for safety are high. This seminar will present a useful and time-tested model of collaborative decision making for psychologists to use when they help families address these critical decisions.

Learning Objectives - This workshop is designed to:

  • Help participants engage older adults and their families in a decision making process that respects both the older adult's autonomy and the caring family's desire for the elder's safety and care;
  • Provide participants with basic skills for assessing older adults true abilities, manifested over time that drive the decision making process, and
  • Enable participants to lead older adults and their families around common obstacles that complicate decision making.
