A client’s spirituality is one of the most important issues in counseling; yet, it is often the least addressed issue. Helping professionals are often unsure where to start in addressing this sensitive topic, or fear ineffective delivery of interventions. Research demonstrates that acknowledging and understanding a client's spiritual framework is vital to the therapeutic relationship and helping the client explore their own spirituality can be beneficial. Spiritual assessment is a tool that can assist in this process by sparking conversations about spirituality. This presentation will review the research and provide a tool to assist in the client exploring their spirituality.

Learning Objectives - This workshop is designed to teach participants to:

  • Discuss relevant research associated with spirituality and mental health
  • Describe the Spiritual Wellness inventory, and
  • Assess ways in which spirituality can be integrated into therapy.
