Description:
Opiates have become a serious public health issue in Ohio. Psychologists in Ohio need to be aware of the facts about this epidemic in order to provide better treatment and referral. The increase in unintentional overdose deaths is alarming. The Ohio Health Department, the Mental Health and Addiction Services Department and the State Legislature are actively exploring solutions to this problem. This presentation and article from the National Institute of Drug Addiction will provide psychologists with background information about opiate abuse and comorbidity between addictions and mental illness.

Learning Objectives:

  • Improve sensitivity to potential opiate abuse in patient population.
  • Learn the genetic relationship between addictions and mental illness.
  • Learn which treatments demonstrate evidence of effective use for individuals with comorbid addictions and mental illness.
